Parental Warfare, NC-HCAP's parent workshop, is an outreach program
for parents and mentors of disadvantaged students. The workshop
provides these adults with strategies and support to help their
children develop into caring, engaging members of society who are
proactive in their personal, educational and professional pursuits.
By empowering the parents and mentors of our state's youth, this
program ultimately works to increase the number of underrepresented
students who consider careers in the health sciences.
Conducted in the community -- at Area Health Education Centers,
public schools or through various community-based organizations
-- these highly interactive workshops introduce the concept of holistic
parenting and mentoring and engage participants in discussions and
activities that allow them to examine the values and skills they
teach as well as how their messages may conflict with those children
receive from other sources. The workshops also present practical
strategies for interacting with youth to promote personal, educational
and professional growth as they become adults and inform participants
about career opportunities in the health professions and associated
educational and financial aid programs in North Carolina.
