The North Carolina Access, Retention and Completion Initiative
in the Allied Health Sciences prepares underrepresented and disadvantaged
students for successful matriculation into professional allied health
degree programs. To meet this goal, undergraduate students from
Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina A&T State University,
NC Central University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke
and Winston-Salem State University participate in five teleconference
broadcasts of the "Introduction to the Health Professions"
course (AHSC-40) offered each semester by the Department of Allied
Health Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The teleconferences increase student awareness to and interest
in educational and career opportunities, academic requirements and
application and admission processes for Clinical Laboratory Sciences,
Cytotechnology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Radiologic
Science, Recreational Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology,
and Speech and Hearing Sciences. NC-ARC participants also become
part of a sustained mentoring network comprised of practicing allied
health professionals, DAHS faculty and administrators, and administrators
from NC-HCAP's partner universities.
The teleconferences are held each Fall and Spring semester.
