The
HCIE Workshop is a hands-on
outreach program for disadvantaged students at the upper elementary,
middle and high school levels (grades 5 - 12). Highly interactive,
these two-hour workshops focus on small group and cooperative learning
activities and are designed to increase the interest,
motivation and number of disadvantaged students considering careers
in the
health professions.
HCIE Workshops, educational packages and related activities are
age-appropriate, targeting grades 5 and 6, grades 7 and 8, and grades
9 through 12, and provide students with general information about
health careers, health career enrichment activities, and health
professions schools and educational programs. Tips and techniques
for improving academic skills as well as information about opportunities
for financial aid and scholarships for both undergraduate and professional
school are also provided. Students participate in self-assessment
through personal inventory exercises and engaging discussions about
health issues affecting pre-teens and teens. Additionally, these
workshops increase student and parental awareness of services and
activities related to health careers that are offered by NC-HCAP.
Supplemental activities include small group and cooperative learning
activities with extensive workshop presenter and student interaction,
and may also feature guest presenters from a variety of health careers
and health careers videotapes.
The HCIE Workshop is sponsored by NC-HCAP, the University of North
Carolina system and the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers
Program and is conducted at no cost to
pre-college educational institutions and organizations across the
state.
