| FAQ
What
is NC-HCAP? What do you do?
NC-HCAP is an interinstitutional program of the University of North
Carolina designed to improve the overall health of North Carolinians
by increasing the number of disadvantaged students who successfully
pursue health-related careers. Please browse our web site for more
information on our mission,
history, and programs.
We serve students of all ages, their parents and guardians, and
the communities in which they live and work. If you still have questions,
please contact us.
Where
are you located?
The North Carolina Health Careers Access Program is located in Suite 3307 of the new Student and Academic Services Building South on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
We also have NC-HCAP Centers on the campuses of NC Central University,
UNC-Pembroke and Elizabeth
City State University. You can find specific contact information
for each Center here.
What
programs do you offer?
From summer programs to enrichment workshops to lectures by prominent
health professions, we provide a wide range of opportunities for
students of all ages to explore, research and become involved in
the health care field. Visit our Programs
& Services page to find out more information.
I
am a senior in college. How can your program help me?
We would be happy to speak with you about your future, whether you
are planning to enter the work force in a health career or applying
to graduate health professions programs. Our library is packed with
information about admissions tests (GRE, PCAT, AHPAT and MCAT) as
well as with brochures and course catalogs for many health professions
programs across the country. We also have financial aid information
for you to browse. In addition, please take a look at our Enrichment
Directory, which lists post-baccalaureate programs and appropriate
internships and training opportunities.
Can
your program help me decide the college or university that is best
suited for me?
Of course we can help, although no one can make that decision for
you. Visit our resource library or talk with members of our staff
who have years of experience helping students make similar decisions.
We can also guide you toward internships and programs, both in the
field and at universities across the country. We also encourage
you to contact and visit schools that you might want to attend.
Actually seeing the campus and meeting people in the department
to which you'll be applying is often the best way to answer these
questions.
Do
you only help people who are interested in a health career?
NO! While our primary focus is on students who are interested
in a health career, we will help you in any way we can. Our library
is a great resource for all students. Visit us for information on
financial aid, admissions tests and test preparation, summer experiences
in the sciences, writing and study skills, as well as leadership
opportunities on the UNC campus and beyond. If, after visiting us,
your questions are not answered, we will find someone on campus
who can answer them.
If
I participate in NC-HCAP programs or activities, will that help
me get into Carolina?
Though participating in one of our programs will not insure admission
to UNC, it will teach you skills and provide you with experiences
that will make you more attractive to all undergraduate institutions.
We can help you learn more about the subjects that interest you,
find challenging and relevant internship experiences, improve your
test scores and make contacts who can serve as references in the
field.
Do
you have connections with other programs on campus?
YES! NC-HCAP works to maintain contacts across campus; it is a part
of our mission. We regularly collaborate with undergraduate departments
and programs (such as student affairs, the Learning Center, and
pre-professional programs) and with all the health professional
schools at UNC (Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy,
Social Work and Allied Health). In addition, we maintain close contact
with student organizations on campus, such as the Minority Association
for Pre-health Students (MAPS) , the Student National Medical Association
(SNMA) and the Student National Dental Association (SNDA).
Also, many
students who participate in the SEP Program go on to participate
in the MED Program at UNC's medical school. If you'd like information
on other programs offered at UNC or throughout the state, we are
a great starting point. Please contact
us with your questions.
Do
you offer internships?
We do not offer internships within our program. We can, however,
help you find an internship with an organization that best fits
your interests and needs. Please take a look at our Enrichment Directory
or stop by our library and talk with a staff member.
If you are
an undergraduate student at Carolina interested in leadership experience
during the academic year, please explore and consider joining our
Ambassadors Program.
Do
you offer financial aid opportunities?
We do not offer financial aid for your education; rather, we are
a resource to help you find such funding. We have information
available about loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study programs,
as well as staff who are willing to help you find the resources
you need to fund your education.
Are
you a job-finding agency? Can you help me find a job?
We are not a job-finding agency and we cannot "get" you
a job. However, we have information about the many healthcare fields
in our resource library that will assist you in deciding what field
you want to pursue. We can also provide you with many experiences
over the course of your education that will empower you to make
contacts in your field and explore many types of jobs so that you
will be more marketable when you graduate. In addition to utilizing
our career resource library, you may be interested in participating
in our Health Professions Forum next Spring.
How
much does it cost to have a workshop at my school or organization?
As with all of our programs, our workshops are FREE! Please
visit the HCIE section of our web site for more information or to
register to host a workshop.
