NC-HCAP
Ambassador Kedrick Perry awarded Frances L. Phillips Travel Scholarship
04.10.03
Chapel Hill,
NC—NC-HCAP Ambassador Kedrick Perry was
recently named one of the recipients of the prestigious Frances
L. Phillips Travel Scholarship. Perry will travel to London this
summer to study the culture of the Black British through a two-month-long
project that he has designed and will direct independently. By immersing
himself in cultural experiences, he will explore literature, art,
drama and social politics in order to understand his subject and
broaden his world view. Perry hopes his trip will help him gain
a better appreciation of his own culture by comparing and contrasting
it to the British tradition.
The
Phillips Scholarships, which are awarded to juniors and seniors
at UNC on the basis of a competitive written application and committee
interview, provide the financial resources needed to design and
direct international travel and study experiences.
Perry
is a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a
minor in nutrition. In addition, he is currently serving as President
of the North Carolina Health Careers Access Program Ambassadors
and has worked with UNC's Order of the Bell Tower, the Campus Y,
the Black Student Movement (BSM), and has volunteered in the ENT
Clinic at UNC Hospital.
Though
Perry has proven himself an independent leader and scholar, he credits
this opportunity to his mother, who he says "has always encouraged
me to broaden my horizons."
