NC-HCAP
Ambassadors
NC-HCAP Ambassador Program Overview
The Ambassador Program was officially established as a student organization
in the fall of 1998. The Program selects pre-professional health sciences
students to serve as liaisons between NC-HCAP and the underrepresented
and disadvantaged populations of
the campus communities. The
Ambassadors’ mission is to increase awareness of NC-HCAP programs
and services to the student population at UNC. To accomplish this
goal, NC-HCAP ambassadors make presentations to other student organizations
throughout the academic year, and initiate and maintain lasting, useful
partnerships among other interrelated student groups. Additionally,
Ambassadors make presentations to the community (both campus and surrounding)
regarding health professions and health-related issues as well.
Ambassadors
also go out into surrounding communities to help improve the quality
of life for those citizens. At least twice weekly, the Ambassadors
work with various programs and organizations (on and off campus)
as well as off campus to tutor and mentor elementary, middle school-aged,
and high school students. This service component is further expanded
with the opportunity to travel with NC-HCAP staff across the state
to co-present health career workshops and serve as role models to
pre-college students. Ambassadors also conduct yearly fundraisers
to provide needed resources for area students.
The
benefits of being an Ambassador are not limited to
the NC-HCAP organization
and the community; your participation in the Ambassadors Program
solidifies certain
benefits for you as well. You
will foster your leadership
potential and hone your presentation skills while learning
about public relations. NC-HCAP
staff will provide you with professional development opportunities
(like attending national conferences for health professionals and
health professions students); connect you with shadowing experiences
with health professionals in your area of interest; offer an opportunity
to take career-related tours and attend seminars; and serve as your
advocate for admission into graduate/professional schools.
It is our hope
that, as an Ambassador, you will have a rewarding and enjoyable
experience that will assist you in achieving your ultimate goal
of becoming a health professional.
